The city is widely known for its pioneering spirit and large role in the world of arts and culture. Chicago’s economy relies heavily on finance, food processing, manufacturing, and printing. Its educational systems also help to feed the local economy; notable colleges and universities within the city include the University of Chicago, Depaul University, Loyola University, and Columbia College. Of the citizens in Chicago who are 25 or older, roughly 72% hold a high school diploma, and 25% hold at least a bachelor’s degree. The city offers its residents several events annually, which help them to cope with their notably cold winters and hot, humid summers. Most of Chicago affiliates itself with the Democratic Party. Current Mayor Richard Daley is known for his firm stance on improving education and for his efforts in reducing crime in the city, whose population is quite diverse. The currently population is roughly 36% African American, 31% White, and 26% Hispanic or Latino. Mayor Daley also directs his efforts toward stimulating Chicago’s business climate.
