Flanked by Everglades National Park to the west and Biscayne National Park to the east, Miami, Florida has become popular with tourists and residents alike for its beaches, historic architecture, and shopping. More than 12 million domestic and international visitors flood the subtropical city annually to view its many attractions, including its proximity to the glamorous Art Deco district in South Beach, world renowned for its nightclub scene.
The city’s location on the Biscayne Bay, coupled with its year round warm climate, has helped to make the Port of Miami one of the busiest entry points in the U.S., and it is currently the largest cruise ship port in the world. More than 17% of Miami’s employed residents work in the city’s service sector, a reflection of its booming tourism industry. Additionally, Miami’s importance in the world of print media, fashion, and international trade has cemented its presence as a global city. Hispanics and Latinos (of any race) comprise more than 65% of the city’s population. Blacks (many from the Caribbean) and African Americans account for more than 22%, and Non-Hispanic Whites for roughly 12%.
Miami’s education system caters to its diverse population by supporting one of the few public school districts in the nation that offers optional bilingual education in Haitian Creole, Mandarin Chinese, and Spanish. Currently, 53% of Miami citizens hold at least a high school degree. Miami’s MAST Academy was ranked as the nation’s best magnet school, and the city’s private schools—including Ransom Everglades, Miami Country Day School, and Gulliver Preparatory School—are widely regarded as some of the best schools in the U.S. Students and residents have access to a wide variety of public transportation, including the Metrobus and Metromover, as well as the Tri-Rail and Metrorail for more rapid transit.
The city is governed by the mayor-city commissioner system. Five commissioners are elected from single member districts. The commission, along with the mayor, acts as the city’s governing body. Current Mayor Tomás Regalado and his predecessor Manny Diaz have worked hard during their terms to revive the city. In 2008, Forbes Magazine dubbed Miami one of America’s “cleanest” cities, owing the distinction to the city’s green spaces, clean streets, good air quality, clean drinking water, and citywide recycling programs. In recent years, Miami’s government has taken a stance to advocate bicycling to its citizens for not just recreation, but also for commuting. Miami has instituted a 20-year plan for bike paths throughout the city.
