Residents of Phoenix have access to the city’s several water parks to help them escape the heat during the especially warm months. During more moderate times of the year, citizens enjoy outdoor recreation, especially golf. All year round, citizens can experience Phoenix’s rich arts scene; Phoenix Symphony Hall alone supports several performances by symphonies, ballet troops, and opera groups, and numerous small music venues and art galleries can be found throughout the city. On the first Friday of each month, Phoenix hosts an open gallery event for its residents.

Technology, service, and aerospace are the major sources of employment for the city, which has a median household income of roughly $50,000 annually. Nearly 23% of Phoenix’s citizens hold a college degree, which can be attributed to Phoenix’s dedication to higher learning. The city is home to several colleges and universities, including Grand Canyon University, Ottawa University of Phoenix, the Art Institute of Phoenix, and Apollo College.
Travel throughout the city is made possible by Phoenix’s bus and light rail system. Phoenix is laid out on a grid system, with Interstate-10 and Interstate-17 being routed into the city, facilitating transit in and out of the Phoenix. Several residents still use bicycles to commute to work and for general travel throughout the city. Most air traffic is controlled by the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. Tourists travelling to Phoenix have a wide range of attractions to choose from, including The Phoenix Zoo, South Mountain Park, Desert Botanical Gardens, the Phoenix Art Museum, and Bank One Ballpark. Since the 1950’s, the majority of Phoenix’s citizens have affiliated themselves with the Republican Party. During the term of current Mayor Phil Gordon, Phoenix has seen several improvements to public safety and educational policy, as well as environmental programs. In 2009, Mayor Gordon unveiled an environmental action plan, dubbed “Green Phoenix,” that, if properly implemented, would make Phoenix the nation’s first city that is carbon-neutral.
