Situated on the Narragansett Bay, Providence, Rhode Island has emerged as a commercial, financial, and medical hub on the nation’s East Coast. While the city’s economy is fueled by several emerging industries, including conventions and tourism, many local jobs are in the government sector, as Providence is the state’s capital. Citizens of Providence have a median household income of roughly $36,000 annually, and of the population who are 25 years of age or higher, about 25% have a bachelor’s degree or higher. The city is home to several world-renowned colleges and universities, including Ivy League Brown University, the Rhode Island School of Design, and Johnson & Wales University.
Providence’s culture is unique, partly because of its ethnic diversity; about 45% of the population is White, 30% are Hispanic or Latino, 14% are African American, 4% are Asian, and 2% are American Indian. The city has many ethnic neighborhoods, including Italian sections (such as North End and Federal Hill), Irish Sections (such as Smith Hill), and Portuguese sections (such as Fox Pointe). The city is also becoming well known for its progressive politics and increasing LGBT population. The current Mayor David Cicilline ran and won the mayoral election as an openly gay man, making him the nation’s first openly homosexual mayor of a state capital.
The city has numerous attractions for its tourists, among the most notable are Roger Williams Park and Waterplace Park. Residents and tourists have access to many theatres, which are home to such renowned groups as the Trinity Repertory Company and the Providence Black Repertory Company. The city also houses the Veterans Memorial Auditorium and the Providence Performing Arts Center. Famous museums include the Rhode Island Holocaust Museum and the Heritage Harbor Museum. The park system in the city is vast and includes Davis Park, Lippitt Memorial Park, Dodsworth Beach State Park, and Memorial Square. The city’s parks, coupled with Providence’s warm summers, give visitors and residents the ability to experience several outdoor recreational activities, the most popular being fishing, swimming, biking, and hiking.
Providence is located near other major tourist cities, including Newport, Rhode Island. Tourists and residents have access to several shopping and dining establishments; Providence is said to have more restaurants per capita than most major U.S. cities. The majority of public transit in the city is controlled by RIPTA, the MBTA Commuter Rail, and Amtrak. Providence can be accessed via automobile by using I-95, I-195, and RI 146. T.F. Green Airport controls most of the city’s air traffic.
