Located along the western edge of the Oxnard Plain, Oxnard is the largest city in Ventura County. Oxnard was found in 1903, and it is home to two large U.S. Navy bases, Port Hueneme and NAS Point Mugu. Port Hueneme is the busiest commercial port between Los Angeles and San Francisco. Oxnard is also a major transportation hub for southern California. Within the city of Oxnard, you will find Amtrak stations, Union Pacific Railroad depots, Greyhound terminals, and Metrolink, along with Oxnard Airport, which is the city's regional airport.
Based on the 2000 census, Oxnard has a population of 170,358 people, but as of 2006 according to the California Department of Finance, the city's population is sitting right at 200,000. Using the numbers from the 2000 population count, the racial makeup of the city is predominately Hispanic. In fact Hispanics make up 66.22% of the population, Whites account for 42.08% of the population, 3.78% of the population is African American, 1.26% is Native American, .41% is Pacific Islander, 7.39% is Asian, and 40.36% of the population comes from other races not listed.
At the time the census was taken, there were also 43,576 households and 34,947 families located within the city. For households the median income was $48,603, but for families the median income was $49,150. 11.4% of the families who are currently living in Oxnard are living below the poverty line, 15.1% of the entire city's population is considered to be living below the poverty line. The economy in Oxnard relies heavily on international trade, but Oxnard also relies on agriculture, defense, manufacturing, and tourism to keep the people in the city of Oxnard employed. Port Hueneme is not only the busiest commercial port; it is also a key port for trade with the Pacific Rim economies. One of the biggest attractions about the city of Oxnard is the 20 miles of scenic coastline, which paves the way for the many beaches that are in the area. At the beach, you can take part in almost any water sport you can imagine, including surfing. The only downfall to surfing along this part of the coast is that the best surf is found inside of Point Mugu, which means only people with access to the base can take advantage of the best surf in the area.
