San Jose has a high rate of employment and a very high median household income of roughly $80,000 per year. Because of its strong technology-based economy, San Jose’s population is one of the most highly educated in the country, with more than 40% holding a bachelor’s degree or higher. The city also has the distinction of having the bulk of its new jobs, more than 85%, stemming from Silicon Valley companies that are not yet 10 years old.
Residents of San Jose have access to a thriving arts and culture scene, including operas, symphonies, and ballets. The city is regarded as one of the nation’s most supportive of public art, particularly in their downtown area, which also houses several art galleries and museums. San Jose is also home to the Cinequest Film Festival, an independent film festival in the city’s downtown area that brings in more than 60,000 film lovers annually.
The climate of San Jose, as opposed to neighboring San Francisco, is semiarid, due to its location. Bordered on almost all sides by mountains, residents and tourists to the city do not see the fog that is prevalent in the other regions of the Bay Area. Visitors enter and exit the city mainly through I-280, 1-880, and I-680 if traveling by car, and by Amtrak, Caltrain, and ACE if traveling by rail. Within the city, residents have the option of using the local light-rail and bus systems for their travel, and many use bicycles. The majority of air traffic is handled through the Mineta San Jose International Airport.
Politically, most residents of San Jose vote for the Democratic candidate in national elections. The population of San Jose is diverse: roughly 31% are White, 33% are Hispanic or Latino, 30% are Asian, and 3% are African American. Mayor Chuck Reed, himself a Democrat, is working to uphold San Jose’s ranking as one of the nation’s safest large cities. Mayor Reed also has a strong stance on keeping pace with the national “green” trend, working to ensure that San Jose’s buildings, development, and recycling programs are as environmentally conscious as possible.
