With its 4 bayous and access to the Gulf of Mexico, Houston, the capital of Texas, has become a major point for commerce in the southern part of the U.S. Because its economy is based largely on technology, aeronautics, and energy, the city houses several international corporations and Fortune 500 companies. Houston is considered by many to be “The Energy Capital of the World,” a nickname reflecting the city’s more than 5,000 firms relating to energy. The Port of Houston is one of the world’s largest water ports.
Compared to the national average, Houston residents enjoy a high rate of employment and a good quality of life; the annual median household income is roughly $51,000. Of the population that is 25 years or older, 70% hold at least a high school diploma, and 27% hold a bachelor’s degree or higher. Houston is home to several colleges and universities, including the University of Houston, TSU, and Rice University, all of which offer sporting events for the area’s sports enthusiasts. Houston also has professional sports teams in baseball, basketball, AHL hockey, football, and soccer. The average age of Houston’s population is 30.9 years, making Houston one of the youngest of the nation’s major cities.
Houston has a warm climate year round. Residents and tourists have access to several city parks and recreational activities, including biking canoeing, kayaking, and golf. Houston’s citizens eat outside of their homes more than any other city’s residents, bolstering the business of its many local restaurants, pubs, and delis, as well as its growing downtown area. Citizens also support cultural events throughout the city; Houston has one of the largest theatre districts in the nation, comprising 17 blocks and housing 8 performing arts groups. The museum district offers a wide range of galleries and museums, including the Station Museum of Contemporary Art and the Houston Museum of Natural Science. The city also hosts the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, which is the biggest rodeo in the world, bringing in almost 2 million spectators annually. While most citizens navigate the city by car on the city’s well-maintained freeway system, Houston also offers light rail, bus, Metro train, and Amtrak service. Most air traffic is handled by the George Bush Intercontinental/Houston Airport.
The city of Houston is politically divided, although current Mayor Annise Parker is a Democrat. Mayor Parker is working to bolster Houston’s commitment to harnessing wind and solar power to be used as alternative forms of energy to fossil fuels. She is also committed to lowering Houston’s crime rate and has a firm stance on improving public schooling.
