Greenville is the largest city in what is known as “The Upstate” of South Carolina, an eight county region in the northwestern part of the state. Greenville is located along Interstate 85 about halfway between Atlanta, Georgia and Charlotte, North Carolina.
Greenville used to be known as “The Textile Capital of the World” because Greenville's economy was dependent on textile manufacturing. Over the last few decades because of the low wages and the numerous tax benefits that corporations can receive, many foreign corporations have opened up shop in the area. Some of the biggest employers in the Greenville area include Michelin, which has its North American headquarters located in Greenville, but Lockheed Martin and General Electric also do business in the area.
In 2000, Greenville had a population of 56,006 people. Of the population, 62.12% of the people are White, 33.94% are African American, 1.27% are Asian, and 3.44% of the total population is Hispanic.
