Poughkeepsie is located along the Hudson River, about halfway between New York City and Albany. Poughkeepsie is the largest city in both Dutchess and Orange counties, and it serves as the county seat for Dutchess County.

According to the 2000 census, Poughkeepsie had a population of 29,871 people, which places it on the small side compared to other cities in New York. Demographically, the city is fairly diverse. Based on the 2000 census Poughkeepsie is 52.8% White, 35.7% African American, .4% Native American, 1.6% Asian, and 10.6% Hispanic. At that point in time, Poughkeepsie had 12,014 households inside the city. The median income for those households was $29,389, while the median income for a family was $35,779.

While Poughkeepsie sits at the junction of US 9, US 44, and NY 55 highways, the best mode of transportation is often public transportation.
