Widely regarded as the world’s gambling capital, Las Vegas, Nevada has an economy that revolves around tourism. Visitors to the city frequently come to try their luck in one of the city’s many casinos, and consequently bolster the economy of the local retail, dining, entertainment, and hotel industries. Las Vegas has been given the nickname, “The City That Never Sleeps,” referring to the city’s rich nightlife scene. Visitors to the city have access to numerous nightclubs and venues offering a wide range of musical acts. The most notorious late-night businesses are located on the famous Las Vegas “strip,” which is a small section of Las Vegas Boulevard. Many tourists and locals walk on the strip, or take limousines and taxicabs, but public transportation via bus is also available. Las Vegas is accessible to the outlying areas by I-15, US-95, and I-515. McCarran International Airport handles most of the city’s air traffic.
Las Vegas averages 300 days of sunshine annually, and residents can enjoy the warm, arid climate by taking advantage of the city’s many parks. Just outside the city lie several areas for outdoor recreation, including hiking (at Valley of Fire State Park), swimming (at Lake Mead National Recreational Area), rafting (at Hoover Dam), and even winter skiing (at Mt. Charleston). Residents also have access to many local theatres, orchestral performances, and art galleries, which host monthly art walks. Families can enjoy one of the city’s various family friendly institutions, including the Las Vegas Zoo and the Lied Discovery Children’s Museum.
The population of Las Vegas is diverse; about 58% of the population are White, 24% are Hispanic or Latino, 10% are African American, 2% are Filipino, and 1.5% are American Indian. Citizens have access to several institutions for higher learning, including the College of Southern Nevada, the University of Phoenix, and the University of Nevada Medical School. Of the population who are 25 or older, roughly 78.5% hold at least a high school degree, and about 18% hold a bachelor’s degree or higher.
Current Mayor Oscar Goodman has been focusing much of his efforts on downtown revitalization, which he believes is one of the keys to developing the city’s economy. Currently, the median household income in Las Vegas is roughly $53,000. Mayor Goodman believes this number can go up as the downtown becomes more of an “urban village,” which will further increase the city’s appeal as a destination city, bringing in even more tourist dollars.
