Boston is one of the nation’s oldest cities. Tourists and residents can experience Boston’s abundance of well-preserved buildings and parks, including Fannuel Hall and the Boston Commons. The people of Boston have access to hundreds of museums, art galleries, and theatres, such as the Cutler Majestic Theatre and the Orpheum Theatre. Boston has a booming downtown shopping area and thousands of restaurants, including the area’s notorious Legal Sea Foods. The city is also home to several professional sports teams, including the Boston Celtics (NBA), the Boston Red Sox (MLB), and the New England Patriots (NFL).
As the state’s capital, Boston has become a large center for commerce and trade. In addition to tourism, the economy of the city relies heavily on technology, defense, finance, and its medical and educational institutions. Acclaimed colleges and universities in the city include Boston University, University of Massachusetts, and Berklee College of Music. Harvard University lies in neighboring Cambridge. Of the Boston residents who are 25 years of age or above, roughly 79% hold at least a high school diploma, and 35% hold a bachelor’s degree or higher. Boston’s residents are relatively young, with the median age being 31.1 years of age, and a median household income of about $51,000 annually.
Because it was founded so long ago, Boston’s streets are winding, narrow, and sometimes confusing to discern. An abundance of public transit exists to help tourists and residents navigate the city; almost one third of Boston’s citizens commute to work using public transportation. Mass and rapid transit is handled through the MBTA, whose rail service is referred to simply as the “T.” Of the major U.S. cities, Boston also has the distinction of having the largest number of pedestrian commuters (those residents who walk to work.) Most automobile traffic into and out of the city occurs through I-90, I-95, I-93, and U.S. 1. Boston’s Logan Airport handles the majority of air traffic.
Boston’s Mayor Thomas Menino, nicknamed the “Urban Mechanic,” is focusing the bulk of his efforts in office on building strong, safe, and vibrant neighborhoods that are inclusive of all of Boston’s diverse population. Currently Boston’s population is approximately 49% White, 25% African American, 14% Hispanic or Latino, 3% Chinese, and 2% Vietnamese. Violent crimes decreased significantly in Boston last year.
