Newark is the largest city in the state of New Jersey, and it is the 65th largest city in the United States. Newark serves as the county seat of Essex County. Newark is located about 8 miles west of Manhattan and about 2 miles north of Staten Island. Newark has a total area of 24.14 square miles, which makes the city the second smallest land area out of the 100 most populated cities in the United States.
Newark is the second most diverse city in the state of New Jersey. Newark has neighborhoods that are filled with people from a variety of different backgrounds, including but not limited to African Americans, Puerto Ricans, Italians, Jamaicans, Mexicans, Portuguese, and many more. Based on the 2000 Census Report the racial makeup in the city of Newark was as follows: 53.46% African American, 26.52% White, 1.19% Asian, .37% Native American, .05% Pacific Islander, 14.05% from other races, and 29.74% of the entire population from any race were Hispanic.
One of the biggest problems that the city of Newark faces is poverty among its residents. In an attempt to lower the percentage of people, living in poverty the city recently went through revitalization. What lead to the problem of poverty was the 1967 riots. These riots caused many white and black middle class families and households to flee the area in search of better living opportunities. The population loss continued to the 1990s, overall the city lost over 100,000 residents. As of the 2000 Census Report 28.4% of the population and 25.5% of the families in Newark were living below the poverty line.
The economy in Newark has over 300 different types of businesses, including 1,800 retail establishments, 540 wholesale establishments, 8 major bank headquarters, and Newark is the third largest insurance center in the United States. Even with how many businesses contribute to the economy, the unemployment rate is still high, as of 2003, the unemployment rate was 12%.
