Situated on the shore of Boston Bay, the residents of Boston, Massachusetts enjoy the advantages that come from living in a large, historic city with a major seaport. Boston is one of the nation’s oldest cities. Tourists and residents can experience Boston’s abundance of well-preserved buildings and parks, including Fannuel Hall and the Boston Commons. The people of Boston have access to hundreds of museums, art galleries, and theatres, such as the Cutler Majestic Theatre and the Orpheum Theatre. As the state’s capital, Boston has become a large center for commerce and trade. An abundance of public transit exists to help tourists and residents navigate the city; almost one third of Boston’s citizens commute to work using public transportation. Mass and rapid transit is handled through the MBTA, whose rail service is referred to simply as the “T.” Of the major U.S. cities, Boston also has the distinction of having the largest number of pedestrian commuters (those residents who walk to work.) Most automobile traffic into and out of the city occurs through I-90, I-95, I-93, and U.S. 1. Boston’s Logan Airport handles the majority of air traffic.
Boston’s Mayor Thomas Menino, nicknamed the “Urban Mechanic,” is focusing the bulk of his efforts in office on building strong, safe, and vibrant neighborhoods that are inclusive of all of Boston’s diverse population. Currently Boston’s population is approximately 49% White, 25% African American, 14% Hispanic or Latino, 3% Chinese, and 2% Vietnamese. Violent crimes decreased significantly in Boston last year.
