Community Info
Tampa Community Info
With its yearlong warm climate and close proximity to the Gulf of Mexico, Tampa, Florida has gained popularity as a place to visit. Busch Gardens, Adventure Island, and the Florida Aquarium are just a few of the many permanent attractions offered to tourists. The annual Gasparilla Pirate Festival every January brings in hundreds of thousands of tourists and more than 23 million dollars to the city’s local economy.
Residents of Tampa are young compared to the national average, with more than 15% of citizens being between the ages of 25 and 34. Tampa’s appeal to a younger demographic reflects the efforts by Mayor Pam Iorio to develop and redevelop the city’s downtown area as a vibrant heart center for residents to work, live, and visit. The mayor has also aided in the reduction of crime in the city; over the last 7 years, Tampa has experienced a crime reduction rate of 56%.
Tampa has a growing labor force, with more than 22% of its citizens working in the professional or business sector. This high percentage of professional workers shows the city’s dedication to education: more than 80% of residents hold a high school degree or higher, and more than 20% hold a bachelor’s degree or higher. The current median household income in Tampa is roughly $45,000. While insurance, retail, and real estate fuel the local economy, Tampa also has a strong hold on the national media market. The economy is also supported by the city’s military workers and families; the MacDill Air Force is based in Tampa, and each year, residents enjoy an air show that attracts thousands to the area.
Citizens have numerous forms of public transportation at their disposal, including buses, streetcars, and rapid transit. Most air transit occurs through the Tampa International Airport, and most trains are routed through Tampa’s Union Station. Ships depart in and out of the Port of Tampa for sea travel. Still, many residents, perhaps fueled by Mayor Iorio’s encouragement for community walk days, navigate the city on foot.
Between university athletics and major league games, Tampa hosts many sporting events. Local arenas include The Sun Dome, Raymond James Stadium, and Legends Field. The city hosted the 2009 Super Bowl and the 2004 Stanley Cup. NHL and NFL fans regularly come out by the thousands to support their local teams during game season. In addition to its sports teams, Tampa residents also support their art scene by attending the numerous musical and theatrical events hosted yearly at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center.
