Fort Lauderdale is one of the principal cities in the South Florida metropolitan area. Fort Lauderdale is located in Broward County, which is located along the Atlantic Coast. It has a total area of 36.0 square miles, of which 4.3 square miles are water.
Tourism is the main component of Fort Lauderdale's economy. Up until the 1980s, Fort Lauderdale was the most popular spot for spring break among college students, but even though it has declined in popularity, it is still one of the best places to go for spring break. Cruise ships and other water recreation activities is what provides most of the revenue that is raised by tourism. In 2006, more than 10.35 million people visited the city of Fort Lauderdale.
One of the biggest attractions to the Fort Lauderdale area is its location along the Atlantic Coast. Having over 7 miles of coastal beaches Fort Lauderdale can offer a wide range of water activities. Fort Lauderdale is one of the biggest yachting centers in the United States; currently there are 42,000 resident yachts, along with 100 marinas and boatyards.
The nightlife that Fort Lauderdale has to offer only adds to city and its tourism revenue. Currently Fort Lauderdale is home to over 4100 restaurants, which serve a wide range of foods.
In addition to tourism, boating plays a major role in Fort Lauderdale's economy. In fact, Fort Lauderdale is a large manufacturing and maintenance center for yachts. The boating industry alone employs over 109,000 people in the county. The city is also home to the annual Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, which brings over 125,000 people to the city.
Based on the 2000 Census Report there were 152,397 people who resided in the city of Fort Lauderdale. Out of those 152,397 people, there were 68,468 households and 33,001 families in the city. Out of the 68,468 households, only 19.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, while 32.2% were married couples. One thing to take note of is that Fort Lauderdale has a higher percentage of residents that were not born in the United States than any other city in the United States, based on the 2000 Census report 21.7% of the population was foreign born.
